Local engagement in Roma integrationIn cooperation with ICF GHK and Bolt International Consulting as consortium partners, the Budapest Institute participates in a long term project aimed at the identification of barriers and drivers of local Roma integration at local level in EU Member States, and the dissemination of good practices. This project, funded by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), relies on the method of participatory action research to facilitate the solution of problems faced by Roma in 22 selected localities in 11 countries. The Budapest Institute coordinates the work of national experts in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. In the first phase of LERI project (2013-2014) candidate settlements were mapped and pre-selected from 11 members states, a process which resulted in the final selection of 2-2 settlements in each country. Under the coordination of Budapest Institute the following settlements were selected in the second phase: Sokolov and Brno (CZ) Hrabušice and Rakytník (SK), Mátraverebély and Besence (HU), Cluj-Napoca and Aiud (RO). In 2015 the needs assessment and joint planning of the local projects was carried out in cooperation with the local authorities as well as the Roma communities. The implementation of the so-called local action plans has started in October 2015 and will go through September 2016. The locality-specific case studies will summarise the progress of the local actions plans, lessons learnt and provide policy recommendations both for local, national and for international stakeholders. These final outputs of the project will be published by the end of 2016.
