What can Hungarian local municipalities do to improve the living condition of seniors?

Commissioned by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, we analyzed the situation of elderly people in Hungary, as well as the public and municipal services and support provided to them. Based on this analysis, we have produced a brochure of good practices structured around key needs. It is meant to help mayors and other municipal politicians to improve the living conditions of elderly citizens.

The issue is of primary importance: the proportion of people over 65 may reach a quarter of the population by 2030, and a quarter of the adult population has an elderly relative who must be cared for.

There is more and more need for services that support the elderly in maintaining their independence. But aging not only creates new tasks but also creates new opportunities for municipalities: retirees are becoming healthier and better educated, so their free time and expertise are also a resource for municipalities.
