The effects of COVID-19 on labour market and policy making – the 2021 issue of The Hungarian Labour Market

The 2021 issue of The Hungarian Labour Market and its “In Focus” chapter discuss the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labour market and related areas (e.g. health and education), and the policy measures taken in response. The aim of this volume is to summarise, describe and provide a primary analysis of the evidence gathered during the first three waves of the pandemic.

BI researchers have contributed as authors or co-authors of the following studies:

- in the first, we explore the extent to which the Hungarian welfare system was prepared to deal with the social impacts of the pandemic;

- in the second, we scrutinize - based on individual data - the extent to which the COVID-19 affected youth employment and we analyse what happened to young people who lost their jobs and registered as unemployed during the first wave of the pandemic;

- in the third, we show how Public Employment Services in EU Member States have responded to the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic by taking steps to effectively help the unemployed;

- finally, in the fourth, we summarise the main impacts of the first three waves of the pandemic on mortality and health care system, based on the literature to date.
